Big Data

February 11, 2014  |   Posted by :   |     |   Comments Off on Big Data»

Definition: Big Data refers not only to the volume of data accumulated by an agency by all its systems but also to the derived statistics, metrics, and data created from those original data.

What this means: The variety of data has been stretched to include voice, video, and images, as well as documents.  Then include in Big Data what’s called velocity–the challenge of managing the demand for real-time data, fast exchanges among applications and databases, and the speed at which data are added to the data warehouse.  An agency must manage not just the data that it collects, but also the data that it creates.
